Iwao Sugitani, MD, PhD (Endocrine Surgery)

Dr. Sugitani obtained his Medical Doctor degree from University of Tokyo in 1989 and had worked at Division of Head & Neck, Cancer Institute Hospital, Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research from 1994 to 2013. Now, he is Graduate School Professor & Chairman of Department of Endocrine Surgery, Nippon Medical School. He is an active member of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons, a corresponding member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, a corresponding member of the American Thyroid Association, a member of the Endocrine Society, a member of the advisory committee of the Asian Association of Endocrine Surgeons, a council member of the Asia Oceania Thyroid Association, a member of the board of directors of the Japan Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the Japanese Society of Thyroid Surgery, and the Japan Thyroid Association. He is also a representative organizer of the Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma Research Consortium of Japan.

His main researches are focused on clinical studies for thyroid cancer including active surveillance of microcarcinoma, risk stratification of papillary thyroid carcinoma, clinical trials for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma and so on. Until now, he published 57 English papers and 34 book chapters (including in Japanese). He won 2011 annual award of the Japan Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
