AOT: What are the essential elements of a good academic paper?

Dr. Covantsev: There are well-written guidelines on how to write a good academic paper. A good research should have evidence, analysis, argumentation and final application. These key points make a research valuable to the society and fellow scientists. Therefore, as a sum up, you should always remember that a good academic paper should be useful to others.

AOT: Do you think it is important to follow reporting guidelines (e.g. STROBE, PRISMA and CARE) during the preparation of manuscripts?

Dr. Covantsev: Reporting guidelines are a valuable tool for both early career and experienced researchers. I get frequently asked what should be included in an article or how to write a first paper. When you look at the guidelines, you already have a good checklist of the points that you have to include in your manuscript. When you follow reporting guidelines, it is easier to construct a plan of your future manuscript without losing any of the necessary data. When the work is done, you have a research paper which is based on three fundamental principles: accuracy, transparency, and usefulness. And this is when real science begins.

AOT: Would you like to say a few words to encourage other academic writers who have been devoting themselves to advancing scientific progress?

Dr. Covantsev: Perseverance is the key that opens every door and even an extremely difficult milestone can be achieved by making one step at a time. If you like what you are doing and passionate about it then just keep it up. It’s often as simple as it sounds and can lead you wherever you want.
